The skin has fatty acids and other secretions from sweat glands and hair follicles that make the surface of the skin acidic. This acidic layer of the skin is a natural defense mechanism that protects our skin from pathogenic bacteria. The acidic surface of the skin is the body’s first defense mechanism.

The pH of the skin is between 4.5 and 5. The pH of 7 is the pH of the water and is neutral. Washing hands, using skincare products, and exfoliation may neutralize the acidic property of the skin, returning it to its normal acidic level in less than 20 minutes.
